William Francis Nugent
Mr. Nugent, a retired United Steel Workers Director, died of pneumonia April 2 2014 at Allegheny General Hospital. The O'Hara Township resident was 69. Born in Baltimore, MD, on 08/21/1944, he attended St. Phillip and James Elementary School and City College, where he played on the football team and was nominated as a McCormick Unsung Hero. After high school, he worked various jobs and was also a dancer on the Buddy Deane Show on WJZ TV. In 1965, he married Sue Ellen Harris of Baltimore, and they've remained together for 49 years. In 1965 he started working at Bethlehem Steel - Sparrow's Point and went on to be elected as an officer in the United Steel Workers Local 2609, before later becoming an International Representative of the union in Baltimore. He studied Philosophy and Political Science at night at Towson University and in 1998 moved to Pittsburgh where he was named Director at the United Steel Workers International Headquarters. He retired in 2010.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Heather Michelle Nugent of Dunkirk, NY; his son Patrick William Nugent of Los Angeles, CA; grandson Ian Patrick Nugent of O'Hara Township; granddaughters, Mary Elise Noonan and Maggie Grace Nugent; and his sisters Kathleen Smith of Baltimore, MD and Mother Genevieve Regina who is a Little Sister of the Poor in Latham, NY.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11 AM at the Little Sisters of the Poor, 601 Maiden Choice Lane, Baltimore, Maryland 21228. Family respectfully suggests donations be made to: Little Sisters of the Poor 1028 Benton Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212 or Animal Friends 562 Camp Horne Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Arrangements by Perman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 923 Saxonburg Blvd. at Rt. 8, Shaler Township.
