Steve Helides was born on December 14, 1957, the first son of the late Sava and Dolores (Cavlovich) Helides. He died unexpectedly at home on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, 2022.
He attended St. Nicholas School, Millvale, PA and graduated from Shaler Area Sr. High. He entered the Army and was stationed in Germany in Communications. Upon return he graduated from Point Park College, Pittsburgh PA in Communication and Radio Broadcast.
In his life, he never had a bad word for anyone (even the teams opposing his beloved Pittsburgh Teams). Tidbits about Steve-he was responsible for all the nicknames for his family (Chappy, Senora, Freck-Aroo, Hockey Hero, Jose and Beebs); tried out for high school baseball team but was statistician instead; vendor at Three Rivers Stadium; fantastic memory on sports facts; worked 30 years at Giant Eagle (known as Brother Steve Storewide); seemingly ordinary but extraordinary considering he had high functioning Asperger's.
Loved to dance (3 A.M. dance off to “elephant walk); took Arthur Murray dance classes and used his skill to clear the dance floor at his sister Mary’s wedding; enjoyed women’s body building; watching Gunsmoke and sports with his family; listening and dancing to Uptown Funk. When eating out he always had “one for here and one to go” meals.
Steve is survived by his siblings- Mark Helides (Beth), Mary Radacosky (David), Paul Helides, Joanne Helides (Brian Custard), Elaine Lascher (Mark); nieces and nephews- Marissa Helides (Lucas Grosick), Samantha Lascher, Matt Radacosky (Elise), Nick Radacosky; and great-nephew Dominik Grosick.
His good soul, his big smile, easy laugh, buying cookies and no fear of talking to anyone anywhere will be missed. His family is blessed and thankful for Steve. And Steve, please say Hi to Mom, Dad and Jesus for us.
Celebrate Steve’s life with his family on Monday from 3-7 PM PERMAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 923 Saxonburg Boulevard at Rt 8, Shaler Twp. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Nicholas Church, Millvale on Tuesday at 10:30 AM. He will be interred at St. Nicholas Cemetery next to his parents who he missed very much.
