Age 97, died on October 1, 2024. He was born on June 27, 1927, in Niagara Falls, NY.
During WW-II, he served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate. Richard was on the 1949 Lightweight Crew Eastern Sprints National Championship team as the stroke oarsman and graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. He opened Elmendorf Inc. in 1963 and focused on engineering, design, and fabrication for many years.
Richard was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Virginia Parthenis Elmendorf, his brother, William Elmendorf (Trudi), and son of the late Harold and Florence Morris Elmendorf. Richard is survived by his three children, Gay Lynn O’Hara, of Annapolis, MD, Dana Elmendorf (Beth) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Gregg Elmendorf (Julia) of Colorado Springs, CO, along with four grandchildren Colleen Fiske (Tony), John O’Hara III (Mallory), Andrew Elmendorf (Alexis), and Abigail Elmendorf, and five great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Northgate Church Northgate Church 238 W View Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: Light of Life Rescue Mission Light, 665 Ridge Ave. Pittsburgh PA 15212, or Shaler North Hills Library, 1822 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA 15116.
